SEMIOTICS & FRAMING

Semiotics and Framing can get very confusing. Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols, while Framing is putting them to use. For example in the above picture, what is it? If you said that it's a pipe you are wrong. It's a picture of a pipe. It isn't a physical pipe that we can pick up or touch, it's just a picture. An example of framing is the below picture of the people trying to survive the hurricane Katrina. They say in the picture on the left that they "Find". The picture on the right they say "loot". They are both doing doing the same thing but the word choice they use for the black man is framing him to look like he's doing something wrong.
